Xover: Hikaru no Go/Death Note
Pairings: None
Rating: PG
Notes: I couldn't resist trying to put these two shows together as I kept seeing some kind of parallel between Hikaru/Akira and Raito/L. Don't ask, I couldn't even tell you myself. I did try to put it down on paper (or screen in this case) and it's basically a drabblish type thing for now. Maybe someday, I'll work on a full length story for those four. But for now, I hope this will do. (And make sense *lol*)
Enjoy!

Playing God:

Both boys stare at the looming building before them. First comes intimidation and then the slow but undeniable sensation of being awestruck at what lay ahead. The blond scratches his head a little; the dark-haired one plays with his tie a little bit more. He wonders if he is dressed properly for such a thing – of course under normal circumstances it would have been a stupid thing to think about.

“I can’t believe they’d invite us to Tokyo University for this event,” the blond complains as he lifts up the brochure to eye their schedule carefully. “We are to meet in the recreation hall. I hear they’ve set up several tables for us.”

“I would have loved to attend this university…” the other begins wistfully.

His companion shrugs and begins to lead the way. He slips his hands into the pocket of his dark dress pants, already feeling uncomfortable at having to wear a suit under this hot sun. But he has a duty to perform. It’s a Shindougo event and it’s only natural that the two most talented Go players in Japan will have to attend such a thing.

He really has no right to complain. It is his fate after all.

__

The dark-haired one swirls the spoon faster and faster inside the cup of sweetened coffee before him, bulging but curious eyes staring at his companion across the table as he listens carefully to every word he says.

Of course, the hunt for Kira continues and both know that there is a growing dark cloud over their heads. But neither refuses to give in to the real statements they both want to blurt out loud.

I know who you really are…

I can see right through you…

A flyer floats towards them. The brown-haired one reaches for it quickly. In a flash (a testament to quick reflexes), he holds it to his face and reads to himself. His unseen companion leans over his shoulder and ‘oohs’ in curiosity.

/What’s Go, Raito?/ he asks.

But of course, he cannot answer here. He can feel those dark eyes boring like drills into him and he shifts restlessly on his chair – but just a little bit. It wouldn’t do to give too much away. He tosses the flyer towards his companion and just as quickly the dark-haired one reaches for it and reads.

“Go? I have heard of this game. Have you ever played Go, Yagami-kun?”

“No.”

“Would you like to take a look at it?”

Anything to get you out of my system, he thinks. “Sure. Why not?”

He watches his companion leap out of his seat with a raised brow. That familiar slouch of his shoulders and shuffled steps betray the intelligence within the one known simply as L. But he follows obediently enough. For it is only a matter of time until one of them makes a final move.

The blond stares at the game before him and then lifts his head to glare at his companion who seems to have an air of superiority.

“Is this a game game?” he asks tightly.

“If you want it to be,” the other replies. There is a small crowd of about ten curious students watching the simple goban now decorated with black and white glass stones in various strategic positions.

The blond stares at the board again. He bites his lower lip. He’s planning an all out attack from the beginning. Damn him! I’ll have to figure out a way to counter the next move or I’m toast.

They fail to see the two newcomers make their way to the front of the crowd (of course the others had made way for the two brightest stars of Tokyo University). L leans over the dark-haired one’s shoulder and peers at the board with great interest. He has only heard of this game once before and he tries to compare it to chess. He sinks his hands deeper into the pocket of his jeans and then lifts his head to gaze at the opponent.

Raito stands behind the blond with his arms folded across his chest. He too is watching the game closely and unwillingly compares it to a game of chess – strategy…thinking. It all boils down to who makes the better move.

“Shindo…” the dark haired one begins to say in a rather irritated tone.

“Be patient, Touya,” the blond replies. He picks out his black stone and places it firmly on the board. The two dark-haired boys give simultaneous looks of surprise at the sudden move. The blond named Shindo smirks and leans back on his seat.

There is palpable tension in the air. The friendly match has suddenly become a battle of wills, pride and all out determination.

As each stone is placed on the board, unspoken questions hover in the air amongst them.

Are we friends or rivals?

Am I your enemy or partner?

We both want to reach the hand of God.

One of us is trying to play God.

To become the greatest player in the world – that is my goal.

To rid the world of evil – to what lengths will I go?

I have to defeat you completely to achieve my dream.

I must defeat you completely to hide the truth.

The final stone is placed on the board with a resounding slam. A thick silence falls as they await the outcome. They count slowly, neither looking at each other as mouths move silently.

“I win,” he says quietly. “By two komi…”

“Good game.”

“Right.”

L scratches his head and holds out his other hand to be shaken. “Brilliant game you played there…”

The dark-haired one seems startled at the sudden appearance of the…boy beside him. But being polite, he holds out his hand as well and accepts the handshake. Despite his somewhat feeble appearance, the boy’s hand is strong – his handshake firm. “Touya. Touya Akira. And you are…”

“Ryuuzaki. Over there is my friend…Yagami-kun.”

“I see he is already talking to my friend, Shindo.”

“Perhaps there will come a time when you can teach me how to play?”

Akira looks skeptical but nods politely. “If you wish…” But he is interrupted by the sudden announcement of he and his companion’s name.

“Ah, it looks like they are calling for you,” L says regretfully. “But it was a pleasure meeting you, Touya-kun.”

The professional can only manage a small smile. “Likewise…”

He watches as the slouching figure begins to walk away and in mere seconds, the one who had been talking to Shindo joins him soon after.

“They say they are the best students in Tokyo University,” Hikaru Shindo says in awe. “I promised to teach him Go when he has the time.”

“And I promised to teach Ryuuzaki-kun as well,” Akira says a bit smugly.

They glare at each other for a moment before twin grins appear on their faces. “A bit odd though, aren’t they?” the blond says as he begins to lead the way to the podium. “You get the feeling that they are not all they appear to be?”

“How would I know?” Akira taunts. “You have your own secrets as well, don’t you?”

Indeed we all do, Hikaru thinks as he glances behind him one more time. He sees his new friend, Raito, standing beside the door. He seems to be waving but what is that black albeit fuzzy shape that seems to hover around him? Hikaru rubs his eyes and stares again.

Nah, it was probably his imagination.

/I think the boy saw me, Raito./

/That’s impossible. No one can see you besides me since I have the death note, right?/

/There was something about him though…/

/Stop worrying over nothing…/

“Talking to yourself again, Yagami-kun?” L suddenly says with his face mere inches from his companion’s. He looks amused but tries not to show it too much.

“I…eh…”

“Would you like to have some tea with me?”

Not really…

But to his surprise, L stops suddenly and stares blindly across the school grounds with a small quirk of his lips. “Do you know what Go players hope to achieve, Yagami-kun?”

Raito shakes his head gently. “No. What do they hope to achieve?”

L lifts his hands slowly and cups them before his face. He closes his eyes and says quietly. “To reach the Hand of God. The ultimate move in Go that no one has been able to achieve no matter how hard they try.”

Why is he telling me this now? Raito thinks with a light frown but L opens up his eyes and smiles at him – that knowing look that sends chills of doubt and concern down Raito’s spine again.

“We are almost alike, don’t you think? In our case, we have Kira who wants to play God by making a world filled with only good people, right? But I wonder…if he will ever truly achieve that…no matter how hard he tries…”

And leaving the sentence hanging like a noose between them, L turns away and begins to walk towards the waiting limousine.

For only time will tell of what fate holds for four young men in their futures…
