Morning Rituals:
He wakes up at the crack of
dawn.
He wakes up half an hour
later.
He takes a quick morning jog
around the block.
He grumbles and sulks at
being left alone.
He stops to buy some bagels
and over-sized pretzels – the other’s favorite.
He begins to pick up the
clothes that are left all over the floor.
(They both wonder whose turn
it is to do the laundry.)
He stops to pick up a
newspaper from the newsstand.
He tosses the clothes in the
washing machine and realizes they are out of detergent.
Shit.
(They both wonder whose turn
it is to do the grocery.)
He begins to jog back home.
He stares at the coffee
machine as it brews…and yawns.
He greets a neighbor who
wishes to talk for a while.
He opens up the fridge and
realizes that they really do need to
go to the grocery store.
He stops to check the mail.
He tosses the remnants of
some eggs and bacon into a frying pan and prays for a miracle.
He debates taking the
elevator and decides to take the stairs instead.
He sets up the small table
for two and waits.
The door opens slowly and he
comes in with a small smile.
He tries to glare.
But is silenced with a kiss…
…a really long kiss…
The kettle hisses and the
spell is broken.
He places his peace offerings
on the table.
He grins and cannot resist one
of his favorite snacks.
They eat in silence, talking
only with their eyes.
And once the last bite of
bacon is swallowed, Duo smirks and opens his mouth to say,
“It’s your turn to do the
laundry and go grocery shopping, Heero. I’m going back to bed.”
Heero’s shoulders sag in
defeat. Just when he thinks he can finally win or better yet escape his chores
for the day, his partner somehow manages to beat him each and every time.
He trudges off to complete
his duties…
…but vows to win the next
time their morning rituals begin.
